No hockey you say? Nay, nay. ESPN has you covered. Because over the pond in the eastern block are a series of games in the Kontinental Hockey League (or KHL for short). A mostly Russian league that was supposed to keep local prospects from jumping the Atlantic for the NHL, has struck a deal with an American sports network, ESPN.
Tuesday, October 9th, 2012 at 1 pm (mark it on your calendar) Alex Ovechkin and the Dynamo Moscow will take on Lev on ESPN 2 (originally all games were going to be on the online channel of ESPN 3, but looks like they will spare some time on the dos).
This will be the first time Ovechkin has skated live on any of the ESPN channels since the NHL made their deal with the then OLN network that would eventually become the NBC Sports network.
You will be at work you say, and can't watch. Well, they have you covered again with a re-air at 8 pm. If you really want to watch it online, they will broadcast on ESPN 3 as well.
From what I can gather, there will be English speaking play-by-play done by announcers in Connecticut watching the KHL feed in Russia. Not like ESPN has the budget to send anyone over there.
Future dates for KHL action include Sunday Oct. 14 DM vs. Amur - 9 am, Tuesday Oct. 16 DM vs. Sibir - 11:30 am, Thursday Oct. 18 SKA vs. Sibir - 11:45 am. All slated to be on the online channel ESPN 3. If you have a smart phone and cable, you can download the "Watch ESPN" App and get all the channels by signing up for free. You can also access it online at espn.go.com.

Power To The Rankings
Remember the days when the Capitals could barely break the top 25 in national power rankings? Let alone the top twenty. Well the expectation level has jumped to the top ten. Top 5 if you just count the Eastern Conference.
espn.com came out with their mid summer power rankings and the Caps are nestled between the New York Rangers (4) and New Jersey Devils (6). espn is not about to rank the full league however, so their 5 place ranking is just in the Eastern Conference. Guess whose number one.
The Caps, according to the rankings, look to be Southeast Division champs agian. But goaltending will always be suspect, and Burnside sort has that angle down. If Jose Theodore can be the goaltender that he was for Colorado, what's to say the Capitals can't make it work.
Another problem is the recent bump in the road for the Capitals is the salary cap. With Shaone Morrison's arbitration winnings yesterday, the Caps are now about $900,000 over. That means some of the prospects will have to sit in Hershey a bit longer, until at least the trade deadline, when the cap doesn't matter. Or a trade could be likely, but McPhee obviously wants everyone back.
With this new ranking, comes an expectation level on these players to do even more this year. A better start, a better road record. A better overall effort by everyone. Because in a year's time, this team will look somewhat, if not completely different.

Why I Haven't Watched ESPN In 2 Years
Either Americans just don't get it or I guess the Canadians are taking revenge for the World Cup... no? espn's so call "award" called the Espy for best hockey player in 2008 goes to Sid "the Kid" Crosby. A player that was mostly hurt through the season.
Look, I will even concede that Evgeni Malkin deserved better after Sid was injured for FALLING DOWN ON HIS OWN. But did espn, and more importantly Barry Melrose (Tampa Bay's new head coach and resident mullet man) ever give Alex Ovechkin his props for scoring 60 goals in a season or the Caps climb from worst to first in the division? No, they just showed highlights. Am I surprised at this? Not really. I have a feeling we will be seeing more about the Lightning on their broadcasts just to rib their old colleague.
Well, you will anyway. I am sticking with my NHL Network, old games or not.

Great Hockey Not Seen In U.S.
It seems that our neighbors to the north are spoiled in a way. The World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship will be seen in millions of Canadian homes between Canada and Russia. Even thousands if not millions of Russians will be glued to watch the Final on Thursday night. And the Americans, with our Football playoffs and eyes glued to the Rose Bowl tonight, will miss out on some great hockey.
Coverage of hockey in the States is steadily declining, while attendance at the stadiums rises. ESPN has all but ignored the sport, maybe wishing it will just go away. And Fox Sports/Comcast Sportsnet/and any other local sporting medium goes about business as usual, making sure to bump the hockey game if the local high school basketball team happens to be playing for 3rd place in some random tournament.
As the NHL tries to market itself around individuals like Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, it is quite obvious that they have made no headway by going with OLN in the States. The excuses are the same. “Well, when the baseball season/college football season/NFL season/college basketball season/NBA season is over then the fans will comeback.”
The States continue to ignore major sporting events. Given that the USA Juniors made a good run for a medal in the World juniors, and no one down here even knew that they were even playing. While future American NHL players gave their all, like Phil Kessel, Chris Bourque and others that played well got little to no recognition in the States. Maybe a 5 second blurb on ESPN’s Sportscenter.
So on Thursday night two giants will take the ice. Canada vs. Russia in the World Juniors Hockey Championship game. There is already an international rivalry that is heated and hard to ignore. There will be spectacular goals, great saves, and crushing hits. The two teams will make a lot of noise, while the United States will sleep soundly through it all. Can you blame us?
