Random Thoughts

I was thinking I would have some time off to take in some Capitals' rookie camp this weekend to give you my thoughts on it, but I don't. So instead your gonna have to take someone else's word on it. Tarik does an excellent job.

I saw that a couple of ex-Caps found new homes. Alexandre Giroux signed with the Thrashers. I think there was a lot of pressure for Giroux to make dividends for the Capitals that he couldn't deliver. So instead he will grow in the Atlanta farm system. We may see him in a Thrasher uniform a couple of times if injuries plague the Atlanta squad, but I do not see him making much noise there.

Lawrence Nycholat got a nice chunk from the Senators who have some faith in the young defender. I thought Nycholat never got a chance to really fit in to his NHL duds before getting sent down time and time again with the Caps. Ottawa would be smart to give this kid some more than just injury duty in the big leagues.

On a final note, I signed up DC Sportschick seeing how she approves of such behavior. I tried to get a private audition for Japer, but they said no.

Pack Up And Get Out!

And when you get there call me.

Caps lose Richard Zednik to the Islanders for a second round draft pick. We could have weaseled a first rounder somewhere, but George McPhee settled for a second round pick. No player in return either. The Zed-heads never came back when the Caps reacquired the speedy winger, just as well.

Also lost Lawrence Nycholat to Ottawa for Andy Hedlund and a sixth round pick. Hedlund was promptly sent to assigned to Hershey. Nycholat fetched a player and a pick for the Caps, nice work. Although, I would have like to see Nycholat start for the Caps. With Hedlund you get a 6'2”, 216-pound native of Osseo, Minn., the Capitals exchange speed for size and a draft pick.

I waited as long as I could for a Dainius Zubrus, but looks like that won’t happen until tomorrow if it ever does. McPhee and Zubie are at odds on the length of contract although both sides talked last night. Wash Post has more on that.

Back On Track

Capitals 5, Canadiens 1
ScoresheetWash PostCanada.com

On the verge of losing their 6th straight, the Washington Capitals such needed a couple of friendly bounces. They got it tonight as they faced down the Montreal Canadiens and took control of this game and never looked back.

Dainius Zubrus and Alex Semin both scored a pair and Lawrence Nycholat scored his second career NHL goal and Alex Ovechkin grabbed the playmaker. The Canadiens scored the first goal, but the Caps answered quickly on the next Power Play. Olaf Kolzig had 27 saves including a fantastic save were he robbed Michael Ryder from a wide open net goal with an outstretched glove.

Caps get back their killer instinct and finish the first half of season at .500 (17-17-7). The ship looks to be righted, but there was a caution tone in the post game interviews. Kolzig talked about absorbing the win for tonight and getting back to work at practice Friday.

Overall Grade: B

The turning point of the game was the Saku Koivu’s goaltender interference penalty that would have tied the game for the Canadiens at two a piece. Instead the Caps kept their lead and added one to boot.

This is a different team that the one that limped through their five game slump. They had a better jump in their stride, a more confident look in their play. The Caps knew they needed to put a good 60 minutes together and they got it done. There was a killer instinct about the Capitals. Not an instinct to fall into a defensive shell, which they could have easily done in the third period up 4-1.

Caps face the Thrashers Saturday night, and look to get some divisional points to keep their nose in the mix of teams positioning for the post season. Caps need to come out shooting and play physical. Or they might as well not show up.

Caps Make It Interesting

Again, on holiday break and did not see the game. I did catch some of the highlights (which were very brief) and took a look at the official scoresheet. The Caps didn't do that badly, with what was basically the Hershey Bears.

A few mistakes here and there, but the game reminded me a lot of the growing pains we witness last season. We just have to grin and bear it through this stretch with injured personel. Timo Helbling, Lawerence Nycholat (scored his first NHL goal), Dave Steckel and, playing for the first time in the NHL, Jamie Hunt were all called up to face the Devils. Brian Pothier and Shaone Morrisonn both played but were sick (bad case of mono apparently is going around the locker room). Their times were severly cut.

Glen Hanlon likes to bring up the the kids against the Devils for some reason. When Olie was hurt last year, Hanlon brought up Fredric Cassivi. Cassivi could easily be a NHL goaltender, but lost that day to the Devils, 2-3.

Capitals have a short turn around facing the New York Rangers tonight, I hope that XM Radio has the game cause that is the only way I am going to hear it. Caps have to have a short memory and be ready to come out and hit the Rangers' star Jaromir "the Woman" Jagr.
