Caps Drop A Couple Z's
Dainius Zubrus is a Sabre and the Capitals send a defense prospect for rookie forward Jiri Novotny and a first round pick. One of the more quiet trades on trade day the Caps move a few large payrolls off their roster. GMGM just didn’t want to sign Zubie to a five year deal. Novotny is still recovering from a sprained ankle.
Caps also moved Timo Helbling for a frist round pick from the Sabres. Helbling only played two games for the Caps this year. He is considered a top defensive prospect and the Capitals get a first round draft pick in the up coming draft.
Jamie Heward was also moved today to Los Angeles for a fifth round pick. Capitals lose an experienced defenseman for a deep pick. I would have thought the Caps could get more for Heward.
I thought Zubie was going west, but here is a chance for the forward to do very well with a fast and fluid team. For Zubrus this is a good trade, for the Capitals, eh. Novotny is a very good rookie, considered a playmaker, but will not fill the void left by Zubrus.
What the Capitals really wanted was the first round draft pick, and they let Zubie and a defenseman go for it. Novotny was just icing. With a lot of big names being moved today, this one just sort of was a side note. Zubrus should add some consistency to the Sabres’ lineup. Caps also dealt Richard Zednik to the Islanders for a second round pick.

Caps lose Richard Zednik to the Islanders for a second round draft pick. We could have weaseled a first rounder somewhere, but George McPhee settled for a second round pick. No player in return either. The Zed-heads never came back when the Caps reacquired the speedy winger, just as well.
Also lost Lawrence Nycholat to Ottawa for Andy Hedlund and a sixth round pick. Hedlund was promptly sent to assigned to Hershey. Nycholat fetched a player and a pick for the Caps, nice work. Although, I would have like to see Nycholat start for the Caps. With Hedlund you get a 6'2”, 216-pound native of Osseo, Minn., the Capitals exchange speed for size and a draft pick.
I waited as long as I could for a Dainius Zubrus, but looks like that won’t happen until tomorrow if it ever does. McPhee and Zubie are at odds on the length of contract although both sides talked last night. Wash Post has more on that.

Black & Blue Caps Lose Second Straight
Capitals 1, ‘Canes 4

Capitals played with out captain Chris Clark who took a puck to the mouth in Boston’s game. Dainius Zubrus suited up for this one, but he suffered a knee on knee blow in the previous game. The Caps played a good first, but then just looked beat up. The Hurricanes’ picked a good day to play the Caps.
Richard Zednik scored the only tally on the power play, and the once stingy penalty kill that I praise broke down when the Stanley Cup Champions came to town. The Caps looked a little out of sync in this game. There were too many small mental mistakes that were making them play catch up all night.
Overall Grade: C-
I don’t know what it is about the Carolina Hurricanes that I give them a lot of credit in this game for winning it, rather than the Caps losing it. Some of the ‘Canes dads were in attendance for take your pop to work weekend.
Caps need to hit a reset button or something. It just seems that they are a little off. Maybe it’s the loss of Clark or they’re a little beat up. Whatever the problem is, the Caps don’t have much time to turn it around when they meet Boston, in Boston.

Caps Finish Road Swing With Win

Olaf Kolzig is on top of his game. The Capital net minder stopped 37 shots from a goal starved Calgary Flames. But the Flames just couldn’t figure him out. Kolzig ties Ken Dryden on the all time wins list with 258 games.
The Caps did a much better job of playing stand-up hockey. Every time the Flames had a rush, the Caps were in their face and stood them up at the neutral zone. It was a great way to end the 4 game western swing. The opened with 2 points and they ended it with 2 points.
Special teams actually worked out how they are supposed to for the Caps. They were able to score a power play goal, and their penalty kill was perfect. The Capitals also were able to get the match-ups they wanted from time to time, which is hard to do on the road; a tribute to the coaches behind the bench running the lines.
Richard Zednik finally got out of his scoring funk scoring 2 goals, one a stuffer and another on a break away (where he ran head long into Miikka Kiprusoff knocking him backward into the net). Dainius Zubrus also scored 2 goals.
Although Alex Ovechkin didn’t score, his presence was felt with some pretty big hits. It hurt just watching some of the hits he gave out in this game. He had two assists on the night.
Overall Grade: B+
The Caps rebound from a couple of soft games versus good teams in Edmonton and Vancouver. It’s nice to see this team roar back and play a solid road game. Caps do need to be careful however not to sit back in the new NHL, where scoring comes in bunches.
The overall road trip is mixed however, the Caps started so well. The middle is something they should forget, and winning in Calgary helps that. The Caps did well getting 5 points out of a possible 8.
I can’t really complain much about their penalty kill either which has showed so much improvement from a year ago. The Caps were able to score a power play goal too in 6 of their last 7 games.
The Capitals come back home to face the Thrashers at the phone booth and return to a new practice facility that opens Wednesday in Ballston, VA. Caps must play well against the Thrashers who will be looking to avenge their recent loss in Toronto.

Caps Live Via Web
Washington Capitals will face the Philadelphia Flyers in preseason exhibition tonight. Bummed that the game is not being televised? Never fear, WashingtonCaps.com is broadcasting the game via broadband off their website. However it is restricted to the Washington area only.
The Caps must work on their special teams, especially if they are planning on taking a few penalties (I guess the infractions are rubbing off on other Washington area Sports teams that start with the letter “R” and end with “edskins”). It’s not only their penalty kill that needs help, their power play needs to start scoring some points after the Devils killed all 8 of their penalties in the previous preseason game.
Richard Zednik looks to get some more ice time. Let’s hope that more ice time can turn in to offensive production, even though Zednik often looks out of position. Wash Post goes into details about the forwards return to D.C.

- Detroit Red Wings couldn’t let Steve Yzerman just leave. Even in retirement, he is too valuable. The Wings made him Vice President.
- Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin won’t have surgery, but will be sitting out 4 to 6 weeks with a dislocated shoulder. Malkin will miss the season opener.
- Brett Hull’s 16 will be raised to the rafters in St. Louis. Hull basically holds every offensive franchise record with the club, so it only makes sense for this to happen in Blues country.

Zednik's Return
He’s baaack! All you Zed heads that had changed your clean hair cuts to mirror the explosive right winger get a chance to be seen in public once again. Richard Zednik is back in a Capitals sweater and this time as a veteran.
I am actually applauding this move. I thought the Caps had made huge mistake on trading Zednik to Montreal. But, we did land a great talent in Dainius Zubrus in Zednik’s place. It will be interesting to see how these two will now complement each other. You can read more on the Wash Post.
The Caps have also made an effort at keeping good talent, especially on the blue line. Resigning Shaone Morrisonn was a step in the right direction. Although, I would like to see the Caps sign a veteran stay-at-home defenseman.
So far the Caps are getting a B from me on their off season moves. While signing a solid defenseman Brian Pothier, the Caps did lose a work horse in Brian Willsie to LA Kings. Although it’s hard to lose a fan favorite, it was time for Jeff Halpern to go, and I think he got a great deal in Dallas.
Capitals season schedule is out and the Caps will open on Broadway. They will again be opening their season on Oct. 5, and play their home opener on Oct. 7 at the Verizon Center (I know, it still sounds weird).
